Dorothea Lange (May 26, 1895 – October 11, 1965) was an American documentary photographer and photojournalist, best known for her Depression-era work for the Farm Security Administration (FSA). Lange's photographs influenced the development of documentary photography and humanized the consequences of the Great Depression. Dorothea, who was close to her mother, also chose to use Lange. Dorothea’s mother worked as a librarian across the Hudson River in New York City.

According to Dorothea there were two most traumatic incidents in her life, one her father abandoned her family At the age of seven, Dorothea Lange suffered from polio which left her with a permanently disfigured right leg and foot. For the rest of her life, she walked with a slight limp, a disability that makes her achievements as a documentary photographer travelling across the country and lugging around heavy camera equipment all the more remarkable.
